The email arrived at 2:17 AM on a Tuesday, bypassing three layers of spam detection and two human assistants.
Subject: I know what Erebus is.
Five words that detonated in the center of Dojun’s carefully constructed second life.
He stared at the screen. The nursery monitor showed Junior sleeping peacefully. Hana’s breathing was steady in the next room. The house was quiet.
And someone, somewhere, knew the name of the thing that had ended the world.
The email body was longer: I know what Erebus is. And I know you built it in your first life. Someone else is building it now. We need to talk.
Dojun’s hands trembled. He’d spent fifteen years burying Erebus—not the code, but the knowledge. The architecture notes in his encrypted partition. The mathematical proof. The memory of what it became.
And now someone was reaching through his carefully constructed fortress of secrecy and whispering: I see you.
He could ignore the email. Delete it. Pretend it never came. Continue the quiet life—the good life—he’d built for his family.
But the email said someone was building Erebus. And if that was true—if someone had independently discovered the architecture—then ignoring it wasn’t an option. Ignoring it was what the first Dojun would have done. The one who believed control meant safety. The one who died.
He typed a reply: Where and when?
The response came instantly: Han River Park. The bench near Banpo Bridge. Tomorrow, 6 AM. Come alone.
Dojun closed the laptop. In the nursery, his son turned over in his sleep, clutching a stuffed robot.
