# Chapter 157: Shadows of the Contract

Mingjun met Junho’s gaze directly. His eyes held something important, yet the exact meaning remained elusive. Mingjun’s heart suddenly quickened, and a faint dampness formed on his palms. He held his silence, waiting for Junho to speak, when his voice finally came—low and hushed, as though sharing a secret.

“This contract matters to both of us, Mingjun. You need to understand it. You need to know what I’m saying.” His voice was quiet, but his words carried weight. Mingjun listened intently, yet the meaning still eluded him—important, yes, but frustratingly vague.

Rain continued to fall around them, dampening Mingjun’s face. They walked together through streets emptied by the downpour, as if the world belonged to them alone. It felt as though this street existed for him, as though they’d come here to make some crucial decision. Mingjun felt Junho’s eyes on him, waiting.

Mingjun tried to compose himself, but he couldn’t grasp what decision they were making. Still, he felt Junho’s gaze, patient and expectant. The silence stretched between them until Junho spoke again.

“What do you mean? Why is this contract so important?” Mingjun’s voice was thin, uncertain. Junho’s eyes pierced through him once more—a gaze that seemed to demand an answer. Yet Mingjun still couldn’t fathom what he was asking.

Junho stepped closer. His voice dropped lower, as though he wanted to speak directly into Mingjun’s ear. Mingjun focused intently on his words. They mattered—he felt that much—but their meaning remained shrouded.

“This contract is important to both of us. You have to understand it. And for that… you need to tell me everything first.” Mingjun listened, but the answer he sought slipped away like smoke through his fingers.

The rain-soaked street stretched before them, empty and still. Two figures moving through isolation that felt almost intentional. Mingjun sensed they were here for a reason—to reach some kind of understanding. Junho waited, his presence heavy with unspoken significance.

Mingjun struggled to organize his thoughts. He couldn’t comprehend what they were deciding in this moment. But he knew Junho was waiting. He knew the words mattered. He simply couldn’t grasp them.

“You have to understand this contract, Mingjun. And for that, you need to tell me everything first.” The same words, repeated. The same weight. The same mystery.

Junho finished speaking and looked at him directly. His eyes seemed to demand that Mingjun speak, confess, explain. But Mingjun remained lost—aware only that something crucial hung in the balance, just beyond his reach, like smoke dissipating into nothing.

They continued walking. Rain fell steadily, cold against Mingjun’s skin. He couldn’t understand Junho’s words, yet he knew they mattered. He waited in silence, hoping the meaning would eventually crystallize.

“You have to understand this contract, Mingjun. And for that, you need to tell me everything first.”

The footsteps echoed on wet pavement. The rain flowed at their feet. Mingjun felt its chill, yet understanding remained distant—important but unknowable, hovering just beyond comprehension.
