Chapter 37: Summer Memories

As they stepped down onto the riverbank path, the scent of earth filled Eunseo’s nostrils. Her fingers, intertwined with Gang Minjun’s, detected the faint presence of ceramic particles on his hand. The summer night air was heavy with moisture, and the river water lapped gently against the shore.

Fireflies flitted between the poplar trees along the riverbank, their lights flickering like tiny lanterns. Eunseo walked beside Gang Minjun, following the soft glow of the fireflies. His hand was warm, like a living thing.

She thought about the way his fingers moved, the language of his hands as he worked with clay. His fingers handled the earth as if it were water, and Eunseo felt like she could understand his emotions through his touch.

Gang Minjun turned to look at Eunseo, his smile visible even in the darkness. The corner of his mouth curved upward, and Eunseo’s breath caught in her throat.

“Eunseo,”

His voice was closer than the sound of the river, a gentle whisper that made her heart skip a beat.

“I want to be with you,”

Eunseo didn’t respond. Instead, she squeezed his hand tighter. A firefly fluttered past their faces, and for a moment, Gang Minjun’s eyes sparkled like emeralds.

Their footsteps echoed along the riverbank path, in time with the river’s rhythm. The city’s noise was distant, on the other side of the water, and all that was left was the sound of nature. The chirping of crickets, the rustling of willow leaves, and the gentle lapping of the river against the stones.

Eunseo’s footsteps fell into a natural rhythm, as if walking hand in hand with Gang Minjun was her destiny.

The earthy scent from Gang Minjun’s hand enveloped her, but it wasn’t just a sense of comfort. It was a sense of belonging, of being needed. When his hand reached out to her, Eunseo finally understood.

His hand was meant for her.

The fireflies grew more numerous, and the poplar trees along the riverbank were bathed in their soft glow. Eunseo followed the light, Gang Minjun by her side. Their hands remained connected.

“Will you remember?”

Gang Minjun asked, his voice low and gentle.

“This summer,”

Eunseo finally nodded, a small smile on her lips.

As they strolled along the riverbank, the sound of the water and their footsteps blended together. The trees, now aglow with the fireflies’ light, seemed to be part of their own private world. Eunseo felt a sense of peace wash over her, and she couldn’t help but think of Gang Minjun’s ceramics. The way he handled the clay, as if it were a living, breathing thing, was a testament to his skill and passion.

“Gang Minjun, your ceramics are truly beautiful,” Eunseo said, her voice barely above a whisper.

“Thank you, Eunseo. Working with ceramics brings me great joy,” Gang Minjun replied, his voice low and soothing.

They continued their leisurely walk, the only sound being the gentle lapping of the river against the shore. Eunseo felt a sense of comfort with Gang Minjun, as if they had known each other for a long time. The fireflies danced around them, casting a magical glow over the entire scene.

“Gang Minjun, why did you start working with ceramics?” Eunseo asked, her curiosity getting the better of her.

“I started working with ceramics because I could pour my emotions into them,” Gang Minjun said, his voice filled with passion. “It’s a way for me to express myself, to bring my feelings to life.”

Eunseo listened, entranced, as Gang Minjun spoke about his craft. She could feel the love and dedication he had for ceramics, and it only added to her growing affection for him.
